Abstract : A mathematical model for axisymmetric free vibrations of the Class IV Flextensional Underwater Acoustic Transducer Shell is developed. The shell is approximated by an arc with varying radius of curvature and thickness. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors obtained from the approximate model for the simplified case of a 180 degree curved beam with horizontally-guided boundary condition agree with those obtained utilizing a previous developed curved-beam model. The model of the shell is coupled to a discrete set of equations governing the piezoelectric stack. The results are then set up in matrix form and the free vibrations of the Class IV Flextensional Underwater Acoustic Transducer in a vaccum are obtained. Results for various design parameters are presented. (Author)
