Abstract : A value of 6.9 plus or minus 0.5 eV has been measured for the work function of a (211) plane of thermally smoothed tungsten field emitter, using an improved probe-hole technique. A compensation is shown to exist between the Richardson constants for recrystallized W and Mo filaments, which may be explained by a Gaussian distribution of fundamental patches superimposed on the micropatches. Periodic deviations in the Schottky effect for Nb, Ta and Ta-on-Nb yield a Wa which is at variance with the Miller-Good theory. A more advanced many-body analysis is needed to explain the results.
