Abstract : In feeding experiments with dairy cows the influence of feed types upon the incorporation of fallout radionuclides into milk was examined. Observations furnished further verification of a method for the prediction of the total intake commitment of 137Cs, 90Sr and 131I from milk by average members of a human population following deposition of fallout on pasture. As a dietary countermeasure against 137Cs ferric ferrocyanide reduced contamination levels in cows' milk and in tissues of sheep and hogs by 91 to 98 percent. Sodium alginate reduced the retention of radiostrontium by sheep and hogs whereas a crude seaweed meal did not reduce radiostrontium incorporation into milk. (Author)
