Abstract : The paper examines Bayes sampling procedures for determining fixed sample sizes from infinite and finite populations. Results of this examination reveal that: (1) Optimal Bayesian sampling can result in a substantial cost savings provided that accurate assessments of the relative system costs are made. (2) Traditional methods of sampling from distributions formed using subjective information are promising but further mathematical analysis is needed. (3) An extensive-form Bayesian method of optimal Bernoulli sampling is used on an actual surveillance problem at NAD Crane. (Author)
