Abstract : A general, comprehensive theoretical model of slope development (COSLOP) is presented that treats the process of fluvial downcutting, weathering, and downslope transport of rock waste, as well as the changing shape of the slope itself, as functionally interdependent components of a system. The processes are quantitatively formulated, and are designed in agreement with general recognized physical laws and with geomorphological experience. For each of the process steps, the model contains several options which permit its adaptation to a wide range of environmental circumstances. The model has been designed as a FORTRAN computer program, with all process options contained in thirty-one subroutines; the subroutines are easily modified, and other subroutines may be substituted, without the need to change the remainder of the COSLOP program. COSLOP lends itself to the simulation of the development of particular field slopes as well as to the testing of hypotheses on slope development. Applications of the model are demonstrated by a comparison between slope model profiles and profiles of field slopes, and by several examples of model slope development resulting from a variety of process combinations.
