Abstract : A methodology for the evaluation of oxygenators is presented that (1) allows a quantitative comparison of the performance of various designs, (2) provides self-consistent data for comparison with a predictive mathematical model, and (3) allows a good estimate of clinical performance to be expected from prototypes. This methodology utilizes banked human blood and is based on the accurate control of blood flow rate and the initial condition of the blood. The stored flood is processed to have a chosen oxygen capacity and to restore organic phosphate concentrations which affect oxyhemoglobin dissociation. A description is given of the construction of an in vitro test apparatus which provides precise independent control of four remaining pertinent parameters determining the initial condition of the blood.
