Abstract : The feasibility of a new hybrid method for the generation of curved lines in computer movies is examined. The method allows curves of any arbitrary shape to be displayed on the face of a CRT. An analog system of polynomial generators, constructed of conventional analog computer components, is driven by D-A converters connected to the digital computer. The digital computer has subroutines which process the images stored in memory into arrays of polynomial coefficients to be displayed on the CRT. Also discussed is interactive connection of this system so that editing may be accomplished in the on-line mode. This eliminates much of the time delay in production of the computer movies and increases the overall versatility of the system. The results indicate that the system may be used to generate movies of improved quality more economically than with the present totally digital display systems generally used in computer movies.
