Abstract : This is the final report for a two year investigation of surface wave phenomena and devices. The investigation included both theoretical and experimental research on surface wave effects in piezoelectric and nonpiezoelectric substrates. Design procedures for interdigital transducers have been developed which are suitable for practical device realization. General relationships were derived from first principles; a new impulse response model was developed for first order transducer design; and second order effects were included. Experimental confirmation of theoretical results is shown for correlation and bandpass filters. The detection of surface waves via the piezoresistance effect in inversion layers is discussed in terms of a normalized gauge function. The magnitude of the guage function in n- and p-type silicon inversion layers is given. Other special topics covered in the investigation include temperature effects in surface wave correlators, high frequency and wide bandwidth pulse compression filters, and effects of photomask inaccuracy on device performance.
