Abstract : The paper deals with some basic aspects regarding the coordination of various theories of supersonic flow and examines the range of their validity and accuracy. By means of some numerical examples a comprehensive insight into this problem is given. Pressure distribution and wave drag for a series of theoretically optimized body shapes are calculated and subsequently compared with experimental results. The experiments consist of pressure force measurements. The slender bodies are optimized for minimum total drag at zero lift including the contribution of viscous drag. With body-volume, main flow Mach number, and Reynolds number being the given characteristic quantities, the results yield the most favorable slenderness ratio and hence the optimum length of the body. The determination of the minimum total drag of slender wings and bodies attainable is a main result of the investigations. (Author)
