Abstract : The fact that frictionless, compressible flow is in general included in non-linear differential equations led soon to a linearization of the gasdynamic equation, in connexion with which, in general, small disturbances of a base flow have been assumed. Prandtl's rule and Ackeret's theory of the plane supersonic flow are first results of the simplification. A comprehensive literature on solutions of aerodynamic problems in the whole Mach number region including unsteady processes started in 1940. (Author)
