Abstract : The paper presents an approximation technique which can be used in the analytic construction of a control law for an arbitrary nonlinear control system. The problem considered here is the construction of a control law which will stabilize the system such that a given integral criterion achieves a minimum value along the trajectory. Liapunov's stability theory is used in the problem formulation, and the solution is achieved by utilizing either Galerkin's method or the method of characteristics, or a combination of the two.
