Abstract : The interaction of a reflected normal shock wave with a two dimensional filament of highly heated gas is experimentally investigated in a shock tube. The heated gaseous filament is created by the explosion of a fine gauge copper wire or an arc discharge between two needle electrodes in the drift flow of the incident shock wave. Transient measurements of the electrical parameters were made using a type of Park shunt and a voltage divider in conjunction with an oscilloscope. Interferometer and schlieren photographic records of the interaction phenomena are shown.
