Abstract : The possibility of using an electron mirror microscope to study the nature of the superconducting state and the vortex pinning sites was investigated under the above contract. A cryogenic mirror microscope was first designed and built. Using this microscope, studies were made of specimens of Sn, Pb, and Nb. In view of the marked difference in resolution of magnetic and electric images, a study of the theory of image formation in the mirror microscope was undertaken. It was found that the effect of a spread in the energy of the incident electron beam had been ignored. An analysis of this problem indicated that a marked improvement in the magnetic and electrostatic resolution should be possible using a highly mono-energetic electron beam. (Author)
