Abstract : The similarity laws for hypersonic flows are extended to flows with large magnetic Reynolds number, assuming the magnetic field to be parallel to the flow direction, and the Alfven speed to be at most of the same order of magnitude as the speed of sound. The equivalence principle according to Hayes on the relation of a steady two- or three-dimensional flow over slender bodies to an unsteady one- or two-dimensional flow remains valid, only the component of the magnetic field parallel to the u-component of the velocity occurs in the governing equations as an additional dependant variable. In the similarity law for slender bodies the Alfven speed occurs as an additional parameter. The Mach number independance principle according to Oswatitsch, stating that the flow field is frozen at very high Mach numbers and for arbitrary body shapes independant of the specific Mach number, remains valid if, in addition to free-stream speed and density, the free stream magnetic field is the same for comparable flows. The medium considered is a real, frictionless gas. (Author)
