Abstract : The matrix isolation technique was used to obtain the infrared spectra (4000-200/cm) of the high temperature species, AlF2, Al2F6, AlF, BeCl2, BeBr2, BeI2, 6LiNaF2, LiNaF2, 6LiAlF4, 7LiAlF4, and NaAlF4. A new method for determining heats of sublimation of high temperature materials was developed using the matrix isolation technique. The method was tested by determining the heat of sublimation of AlF3, and then applied to the lithium fluoride vapor system. Heats of formation were obtained for LiF(g), Li2F2(g-linear) and Li2F2(g-rhombohedral). The matrix technique was further extended to the analysis of unstable radical intermediates in pyrolysis reactions. The infrared spectra of the species CH3, CD3, CF3, and CF2 were obtained using this new approach. (Author)
