Abstract : The Central Laboratory of The Netherlands Red Cross performs many functions in the two basic areas of service and research. Its service role is carried out through (1) assisting hospitals' laboratories with quality control, (2) consultation on problem cases of blood disorders, (3) plasma fractionation and whole plasma processing, and (4) development and manufacture of equipment for blood handling. Research deals with all of the formed elements and plasma constitutents of blood. Of particular interest has been the development of automated techniques for the study of red-cell and lymphocyte metabolism using very small volumes of samples. This has application to a wide range of problems, including HLA determination for patient matching in organ transplantation. (Author)
