Abstract : The Conference sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency covered methods for inducing mutations in microorganisms of industrial interest. The mutagens considered were chemical agents, ionizing and ultraviolet radiation and selective growth conditions. By the separate or combined use of the various techniques, microorganisms are developed which produce feed protein, amino acids, vitamins, antibiotics and other chemicals. Studies are underway to extend the list of useful substances to be made from microbial growth, and efforts are being directed toward utilizing locally available by-products for preparation of much needed foods and metabolites.
