Abstract : The objective of the study was to generate a perception of environmental threat in subjects under controlled conditions and to assess its effect on performance that could be related to fallout shelter management responsibilities. Of the ten test subjects, five appeared to perceive threat as evidenced by noncommittal reactions to concerns expressed by their companions, overt symptoms of anxiety, relatively frequent attempts to communicate with the research staff, and subsequent verbal acknowledgement of perceived threat. Clear relationships existed between the perception of threat and management performance, particularly in the area of social behavior. (Author)
