Abstract : Fluctuations in a chemically reacting system under steady state conditions normally decay in time. The enhancement of fluctuations is known, however, to be possible for some reaction mechanisms with auto-catalytic or cross-catalytic reaction steps. An investigation was made of the phenomena which arise on considering partial molar volume changes and the consequent pressure dependence of rate coefficients in certain reactions. It is shown that such systems may become unstable not only to concentration fluctuation, as in earlier work, but also to mechanical disturbances (i.e. pressure fluctuations). In the analysis allowance is made for the possibility of local disturbances in density and velocity as well as in composition.
