Abstract : The instability of an inviscid free shear layer at small Mach numbers has been investigated taking a variable density distribution in the shear layer into account. Neglecting the influence of gravity, only the inhomogeneity of the inertia will be considered. This restriction is applicable, for instance, in the case of a hot jet in a cool surroundings. The inviscid disturbance differential equation is derived and discussed. It is found that a variable density distribution can produce additional disturbance modes, if the density inside the shear layer has a relative minimum. (Author)
