Abstract : A brief account is given of the methods generally used for presenting in diagrammatic form the characteristics of automatic control systems, including those of aircraft and missiles. From a set of differential equations various diagrams are derived, such as the Nyquist curve, the Bode diagram, response functions, etc. Certain advantages are associated with the various forms of presentation when considering specific properties; however, Nyquist curve and Bode diagram are the main subject of the discussion, as they contain a considerable amount of information. The longitudinal motion of an aeroplane (Do 27) was tested in flight by means of the method using discrete frequencies and the results presented in form of a Bode diagram. The above mentioned types of diagrams can be produced from such flight test data and thus stability and control characteristics be obtained, in particular, properties of the combination of automatic control system and aircraft can be predicted. The possibility of producing an analytical function from the diagram is also shown, giving a sound basis for further analytical treatment. The results obtained from measurement are compared with theoretical results. (Author)
