Abstract : Measurements of off-axis irradiance produced by the scattering of light from a laser beam during its passage through water were made at representative off-axis angles to more than 90-degrees and to ranges greater than 20 attenuation lengths. From these data an empirical equation has been evolved by means of which scattered irradiance can be calculated at virtually any off-axis point in any kind of ocean water if the spectral volume attenuation coefficient and the spectral volume adsorption coefficient of the water are known.
