Abstract : The time history of the progress of deployment and stretching of a parachute is considered as the motion of a primary and secondary body which are connected elastically to each other. The motion as a function of time is represented by a nonlinear system of differential equations. This system of differential equations has been solved for a Kostelezky ribbon parachute by means of an analog computer and gives for the primary and secondary body the time histories of distances, of the velocities, and of the force acting between the two bodies. The snatch force of a ribbon parachute which has been determined theoretically in dependence on aircraft speed at time of release up to 600 km/h is in good conformity with the test values so that an estimation of the snatch force to be expected for the parachute at velocities above 600 km/h can be made. By means of the snatch force determined theoretically for different extensions and lengths of the suspension lines, possibilities of reducing the snatch force are given. (Author)
