Abstract : The Langmuir probe theories of Self and Shih, Waymouth, and Kiel for collisional plasmas are examined theoretically. A probe theory for a collision dominated plasma with a collision dominated probe sheath is presented. Spherical probe measurements were made in a hot cathode helium discharge at 0.3 and 0.4 Torr. Good agreement on the ion densities between the Self and Shih method and a method suggested by Medicus was obtained. The Medicus method gave better agreement with second derivative techniques on the determination of plasma potential than the Self and Shih method. (Author)
