Abstract : The work involves the calculation of the relative Raman scattering intensities of low-lying electronic transitions in rare earth garnets. An evaluation is made as to the usefulness of such calculations in testing the crystal field wavefunctions of rare earth garnets. The garnets studied are paramagnetic YbGaG, YbAlG, DyGaG, and DyAlG, DyAlG is also studied at temperatures below its ordering temperature (T sub N = 2.5 degrees K) and with an applied magnetic field. In order to obtain crystal field wavefunctions necessary for the relative Raman intensity calculations, crystal field analysis are done in this work for DyGaG and DyAlG. For YbGaG and YbAlG the wavefunctions of Pearson (1971) are used in the intensity calculations. Simple expressions of the relative scattering intensities are derived for the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic cases. Such expressions are obtained for several different combinations of the polarizations of the incident and scattered light. (Author)
