Abstract : The rate of deformation affects not only the mechanical properties of metals and the ratio between stresses and strains but also the propagation of stress and strain waves in the metal. Depending on the conditions of high energy rate forming under which the load is applied, longitudinal (tensile) or transverse (bending) waves may propagate in the metal. During its plastic deformation sheet metal is deformed in conditions of plane-stressed state and may be regarded as a flexible membrane, while strip can then be regarded as a thread. Interference between the shock waves may result in discontinuities in the metal and hence also in defective products (creasing, bulging). (Author)
