Abstract : A comprehensive analysis is presented for electromagnetic field behavior in a three-dimensional resonator of finite dimensions where wave diffraction phenomena appear. Primary attention is given to the problem of field amplification from a given initial level at a zero time instant due to parametric interaction between the field and the boundary. A discussion of initial and boundary conditions reveals that the fields of different spherical harmonies do not interact on the resonator boundary, the TE and TM fields remain independent of each other, and both field types can be described, proceeding from the boundary impedance conditions. This means, in effect, that diffraction phenomena are considered under the conditions existing at the boundary, which are more complex than those with a one-dimensional resonator and involves the solution of a differential-difference equation of a given order with variable coefficients. As the first step, a qualitative approach to the processes taking place in the resonator is attempted, analyzing them from the spectral viewpoint. (Author)
