Abstract : Results are presented of investigations of the microhardness of materials, according to height of built-up layers, which are correlated with the degree of mutual penetration at the contacting surfaces. It was established that the microhardness of copper, lead, caprone, and Babbitt layers rises in proportion to nearness to the steel base. In addition, with a high built-up layer the mutual penetration of the two surfaces increases.
