Abstract : A study is given of the motion and vaporization of meteor fragments on the basis of photographs obtained at the Odessa observatory. An attempt is made to apply the theory of permanent fragmentation of particles to bright meteors. The equation of motion is solved by numerical integration. Changes in velocity, mass, and retardation of the fragments with respect to the parent body are calculated on a computer. It is shown that the formation of wakes of bright meteor bodies can be interpreted in terms of permanent particle fragmentation only for slow meteors, assuming that they fragmentize into relatively large particles.
