Abstract : The report discusses the effect of variations of the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index on the values of the effective backscattering, total-scattering, and attenuation cross sections. Numerical values of the backscattering of an ice sphere at temperatures of -10 and -20 C are presented for a wide range of diameters and wavelengths. An estimate is made of the degree of approximation of the scattering and attenuation cross sections to the limiting values. (Author)
