Abstract : It is shown in this report that if a known signal is repeatedly received at arrival times obeying a known statistical distribution, a likelihood ratio receiver can be realized in a sequential fashion which achieves improved detection performance over standard correlation techniques. The repeated occurrence of the signal waveform is described as a recurrence process. A number of investigators have considered the detection of recurrent waveforms, but only Nolte has formulated a receiver which considers the time structure of the recurrence. Nolte's assumption of white noise and simple Markov recurrence process structure are relaxed in the analysis presented in this report. In addition, the time structure of recurrence process is generalized beyond Nolte's description of synchronous and sporadic Poisson processes. (Author)
