Abstract : The significant increase in industrial construction, the rise in the production of welded structures, the expansion of machine building in the shipbuilding, energy and transport fields, and construction of large-scale pipelines have all increased the demand for steel plate and led to an expansion of its production. The output of steel plate in our country has increased steadily from year to year. The percentage of plate within the total output of rolled products has gradually increased. At the present time, nearly 60 percent of the rolled stock throughout the world is in the form of plate and strip. It is planned to increase output of plate by building new rolling mills while increasing the efficiency and qualitative characteristics of existing mills. Matters of considerable importance in this regard include saving metal by reducing unproductive losses in trimming and reducing the range of positive allowances in the geometric dimensions of the plate, as well as increasing the productivity of existing mills and the reliability of their equipment. The effort to improve the quality and reduce the mass of structures and parts made of steel plate has led to a sharp rise in the demands placed on quality and accuracy of the geometric dimensions of the plate.
