Abstract : Based on the concepts as to the nature of external friction processes, the concepts 'secondary structure' and 'boundary friction' were founded. As an example are presented of the results of the investigation in the change in the surface state of a metal under the influence of addns. of Fe or Cu thiocyante in oil. Schematic models are presented of the structure of the surface layers under normal friction conditions, as well as of the hardening of the 1st and 2nd order. (Author)
