Abstract : A program of studies on the ecology and epidemiology of tropical forest environments in the Guama Ecological Research Reserves near Belem, Brazil, was initiated January 1966 and is still underway. The Guama Ecological Research Reserves comprise approximately 340 hectares and include the following tropical forest environments: the terra firme forest, varzea swamp forest, igapo swamp forest and second growth forest. Each of the reserves was subdivided into 10 x 10 meter numbered quadrats in terms of which data were collected for the following: soils, meteorology, botany, mycology, entomology, terrestrial vertebrates, and arthropod-borne viruses (including the vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors). The present report includes: discussion of method of data collection, analysis and interpretation; description of the Guama Ecological Research Reserves; analysis of the tree vegetation of the Reserves; analysis of the distribution of birds, amphibians, and lizards in the tropical forest environment of the Reserves; and analysis of the arthropod-borne virus epidemiology of the Reserves.
