Abstract : A method for deriving an empirical typology from attributes measured on a population is presented, having the following characteristics: (1) that some elements of all the derived types are common to the types; (2) that some elements of each type are unique to it; and (3) that the types may have different numbers of defining elements. The steps involved in producing this empirical typology are outlined and an example is presented of the application of the typology to data dealing with attachment to work. This method of developing an empirical typology is unique and potentially has wide application in the analysis of social science data. (Author)
