Abstract : A comprehensive discussion of the physics, manufacturing processes and applications of thin films in modern communications technology. The following subjects are discussed in detail: (1) Structure and properties of thin films: vacuum vaporization, cathode sputtering, thin film structure and physical properties. (2) Thin films as SHF load resistors: peculiarities of SHF resistors, material selection, behavior in an SHF field, cylindrical disc resistors for coaxial systems, flat absorption resistors for waveguide systems. (3) Use of thin film elements for power measurement at superhigh frequencies: peculiarities of such measurement, thin film bolometers, thin film thermal converters. (4) Thin film local absorbers -- absorption inserters -- for travelling wave tubes (TWT): local absorber requirements, local absorber design, a spiral conductive line with a coaxial cylindrical absorptive layer,experimental characteristics of thin film absorptive inserts for TWT's dependency of amplification and power of a TWT on physical parameters and location of a thin film absorptive insert, use of external absorbers to alter TWT amplitude characteristics, peculiarities of thin film local absorber production technology.
