Abstract : To reduce the time required for the nitriding of calorized steel, the temperature of nitriding was increased without decreasing the hardness of the calorized layer. Specimens from steel St. 3 were conventionally calorized in powders at 950 degrees for 4-6 hr., obtaining a calorized layer of 0.45-0.55 mm with a hardness of 350-380 kgf/mm(superscript 2) and an Al concentration on the surface of 28-30 percent. To prevent the formation of a brittle layer during nitriding 0.15-0.17 mm of the surface was polished away. The nitriding was carried out at 600, 700, 800, and 850 degrees with holding times 1, 2, 4, and 6 hr. (Author)
