Abstract : Many terms used in social psychology, the author holds, are used in vague and amorphous ways, but for proliferation of meanings, logical circularity, and muddle, role and goal appear to lead all the rest. It is his thesis that these terms have been stretched over three distinct systems of concepts for analyzing behavior, and that confusion is the inevitable result. A major assumption of this paper is that three separate conceptual systems are needed when dealing with behavior in the organization, the overt system, the cognitive system, and the official or codified system. These are considered in detail.
