Abstract : Owing to present results on electrostatic ion thrusters in USA AND Europe, now realistic mission studies can be performed. At first, the essential experimental results on the electrostatic ion thrusters ESKA-18-P1 and ESKA-18-P2 are compiled. By means of the obtained engine characteristic values, the parameters for a prototype engine ESKA-28-P are approximated which serve as a basis for some interplanetary mission studies. The analytical results show that favourable flight times and burnout masses for flights to planets and to the sun are obtained with nuclear electric propulsion systems. The missions are computed in two phases: (a) earth escape from 500 km orbit, (b) interplanetary transfers with constant tangential thrust. (Author)
