Abstract : The effect of cooking temperature, charge of chemicals and pulp yield on the light-absorbing properties of spruce bisulphite pulp and its components lignin and carbohydrates has been investigated. The slope of the linear increase depends on cooking temperature and the charge of chemicals being steeper the higher temperature and the lower the charge of chemicals. Spruce bisulphite pulps in the 60-95 per cent yield range prepared by cooks at different maximum temperatures and with different charges of chemicals have been bleached with sodium dithionite and hydrogen peroxide. The effect of a treatment under bleaching conditions but in the absence of bleaching chemical has also been investigated. (Author)
