Abstract : Spruce holcellulose has been treated with a purified xylanase solution. The extent of enzymic hydrolysis of the xylan portion has been determined by chemical analysis and interference microscopy. It has been shown that part (20-30%) of the xylan fraction of the holocellulose is specifically hydrolyzed and removed from the fiber wall. The interference microscope has been used to measure the mass losses occurring at different positions on the fiber cross-section. The mass losses occurred predominantly in the secondary wall.
