Abstract : Molecular beam analysis has been employed to characterize microwave discharges through flowing CF4 and F2 as sources of atomic fluorine. The use of an alumina tube in the discharge region and Teflon-coated Pyrex downstream minimizes surface reactions of the fluorine atoms. The CF4 discharge products contain very little F2. However, larger concentrations of fluorine atoms are produced by the F2 discharge. At room temperature the reaction of atomic fluorine with CCl4 occurs primarily by an abstraction reaction to produce FCl and CCl3. The rate constant for this reaction, at 25C, is 2.4 x 10 to the 8th cc/mole-sec. The CCl3 radical can then undergo a series of rapid reactions with F atoms, displacing one or more chlorine atoms.
