Abstract : Although e.m.f. series have been developed for individual molten salt solvents, only recently have practical attempts been made to relate these series. Theoretical exercises have been undertaken however and these emphasise the close similarity of the series in several systems. The authors have recently completed measurements of inter-solvent and thermoelectric potentials which in combination with isolated literature reports, permit the writing of an extensive unified e.m.f. series, based on the standard aqueous hydrogen electrode at 25C as reference. It is the purpose of the paper to present the said series and to draw conclusions regarding the stability of various solvents and the stability of solutions of silver(I) in them, and to derive thermodynamic data for nitric, sulfuric and carbonic acids at elevated temperatures.
