Abstract : Metallurgical analysis of sections of 1/2 in. rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) plate has identified microstructural imperfections which degraded the penetration resistance behavior of RHA plate in spite of the fact that it met hardness specifications. The brittle inclusions in the poorly performing plates are probably developed during the casting and rolling operations: being most apparently stringers or lenticular regions of non-metallics, i.e., slag. The segregation of these brittle inclusions during casting and their redistribution during rolling, produce planes of easy failure upon the reflection of a tensile wave from the rear surface of the target, and hence the armor spalls at these brittle inclusion planes.
