Abstract : Titanium alloys 8Al-1Mo-1V, 6Al-6V-2Sn, and 13V-11Cr-3Al were susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in methanol + HCl solutions. The all-beta alloy 13V-11Cr-3Al was most susceptible followed by alpha-beta 6Al-6V-2Sn and alpha 8Al-1Mo-1V (10% beta distributed at grain boundaries). SCC can be prevented by additions of both water and NaNO3 which behave as anodic inhibitors. Similarities in activation energy for dissolution and SCC, the alleviation of SCC by applied cathodic potentials, and the stimulation of SCC by applied anodic potentials, and the inhibiting effect of both water and NaNO3 additions are all evidence in favor of an electrochemical mechanism for the SCC of these alloys in methanol + HCl solutions.
