Abstract : The development, construction, and use of an experimental apparatus for testing materials in torsion at high rates of strain is described. Constant strain rate data can be obbtained at shear strain rates from 100 to 10,000/sec. The operation, calibration, and instrumentation of a torsional split Hopkinson bar apparatus is presented along with a discussion of the accuracy and reliability of data obtained with this device. Experimental data on commercially pure 1100-0 aluminum at high strain rates are obtained and compared with quasi-static data and those of other investigators. (Author)
