Abstract : An elastic stress analysis using the finite element technique was performed on a 175mm, M437, HE projectile subjected to zone 3 firing conditions. A consistent model of the projectile and loading system was developed. Specifically, interior ballistic trajectories were generated using the weight of the projectile predicted by the finite element mesh and an axial resistance produced by the rotating band. This axial resistance was taken to be proportional to the band pressure, which was obtained from data generated by shell pushing experiments on a 152mm, M81 gun tube. Principal stresses, strains and yield criteria were calculated in the projectile for nine positions along the length of a 175mm, M113 gun tube (from breech to muzzle). In all cases, the maximum stresses occur under the rotating band, and are due primarily to the band pressure. In addition, significant tension stresses occur in the thin wall portion of the shell forward of the rotating band. It was also verified that engraving of the forward bourrelet occurs. (Author)
