Abstract : The study was conducted to determine the effects upon perception of attaching sections of fricative consonants to the vowel /a/ with which they were recorded originally (CV syllables) and to the vowel recorded originally with a different consonant. The scores that were analyzed were proportions of identifications of the fricative consonants in terms of those attached to the vowel and those originally recorded with the vowel and subsequently removed. The results of the experiment indicate that the recognition of voiceless fricatives in CV syllables is related to both the consonantal and the vowel portions of the syllable. However, the perception of the consonants is not dependent uniformly upon the clues that reside in either the vowel or the consonant. (Author)
