Abstract : A new graphite reactor was built and used to study the pyrolysis of methane, acetylene, and methane-hydrogen in the presence of porous carbon. The degradation products were primarily carbon and hydrogen, although some polymerization was indicated in the case of acetylene. From the experimental results obtained at 1385 degrees and 2215 degrees K, pyrolysis mechanisms were postulated. The study was carried out in essentially four phases: Design, construction or procurement, and assembly of the graphite reactor, the various auxiliary metering components, and the instrumentation; Calibration of the instruments and meters; Verification of the validity of the measurements; and Operation of the equipment to obtain pyrolysis data with specified hydrocarbons.
