Abstract : Previous research has demonstrated that there is a gain in radar target detection performance when coherent target motion is accentuated by time-compressing the presentation of displayed images from successive scans of the antenna. However, a need exists for information concerning effects of numerous time-compression variables upon detection performance and how these variables interact with one another. In addition, time-compression phenomena must be related to our knowledge of the human perceptual process. The experiment described investigated the effects of time-compression ratio, number of stored frames, clutter level, noise level, target direction, and target speed and various interactions among these variables. The results are discussed in terms of existing theories of visual perception. (Author)
